XP : Registry Sections and Functions

Viewed from Regedit page, you will find many key and its subkeys with the data. Of the few existing keys, each key has a different function. For more details, the following explanation.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Another name for this is the HKCR key, this key is a place where all of the Windows file associations are stored, and Windows will find a special folder type classes. In structure, this key is identical to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Classes.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
  • Another name for this key is HKCU, this key contains information about the user currently logged in at that time. Consisting of subkey, among others:
  • AppEvents, contains the settings for sound events.
  • Control Panel, contains the settings control panel.
  • InstallLocationMRU, contains the path / location of the master of Windows (when you first install Windows).
  • Network, contains information relating to the Network or a network.
  • Software, containing about setting or configuration software to users who log on at the time.
  • RemoteAccess, contains information about the Dial-up Networking.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • Another name for this key is HKLM, this key contains information about hardware and software settings that apply to all users. Consisting of subkey, among others:
  • Enum, contains information about the hardware, for example on the monitor.
  • Hardware, contains information about the serial port.
  • Network, contains information relating to the network for users who are active or logged on.
  • Software, the software contains information and settings.

HKEY_USERS
Another name for this key is the HKU, this key contains information about the desktop and user settings for each user who has the right to login to that computer. Each user has a subkey. If there is only one user, then the subkey name is. "Default".

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
Another name for this key is the HKCC, this key contains information about hardware configuration, associated with the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
